Discussion Questions for 1 Timothy 1:5-17:
1. Read verse 5. What does “love from a pure heart” tell you about your new heart as a believer?
2. Read verses 6-7. What do you think it means that these teachers want to be teachers of the Law but don’t understand it? How does this apply to misunderstandings about law-based living today?
3. Read verses 8-9. What is the proper use of the Law? Who is it for? What does it do?
4. Read verses 12-13. Paul reflects on his past as a blasphemer and violent persecutor. How does this encourage you about your own past and God’s grace in your life?
5. Read verse 14. What does Paul’s description of God’s grace as “more than abundant” mean to you? How do you see the overwhelming abundance of God’s grace and love in your own life?
6. Read verses 15-16. How exactly did Paul’s identity shift from “chief of sinners” to a righteous saint? How does understanding this help you know your new identity in Christ?
