New Beginnings

with Miriam Neff
Beatitude #2 Friday, October 16, 2020
How contrary to our current thinking are the promises of the Beatitudes! Matthew 5:4 tells us how to be comforted. Our culture tells us comfort comes from having stuff around us, the more stuff the more comfort. Have the right people around us, a good marriage, good children. Jesus teaches us that those who mourn will be comforted. This is a radical teaching. But it's truth. To mourn is to have godly sorrow that leads us to repent of our sins. We are sad at what makes God sad. We name the sin. The 10 commandments are repeated in the New Testament. We mourn not obeying them. Our sorrow is from our hearts, not for show. We humble ourselves and God gives us the hope of overcoming that sin with His power. That’s comfort.

From One Widow to Another - Book

“Every pastor needs to read this book, and every church needs copies of this book available. Written by a widow, written for widows, this book reads like the experience of sitting at a coffee table watching one widow minister to another widow. It’s that personal. And because there are so many widows, it’s that important.” - Scot McKnight - Karl A. Olsson Professor in Religious Studies, North Park University, Chicago.
